Susan G. Komen Columbus® began in 1993 by a group of motivated and hardworking volunteers. That same passion, carried on throughout the years by thousands of volunteers and dedicated board and staff members, has sustained Komen Columbus and enabled us to raise more than $27 million; $16 million of that has been granted to support local programs, $280,000 in targeted small grants, and  $5 million has supported global research.

Through events like the Komen Columbus Race for the Cure®, Komen Columbus invests 75 percent of its net income to support vital local breast health services in our 30-county service area, and dedicates the remaining net income – 25 percent – to national research to find the cures.

During the 2013-2014 fiscal year, Komen Columbus was recognized as Affiliate of the Year by our global organization.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is an Austrian-American actor, producer, businessman, investor, author, philanthropist, activist, politician, and former professional bodybuilder who holds both Austrian and American citizenship. He served two terms as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011.

Schwarzenegger began weight training at the age of 15. He won the Mr. Universe title at age 20 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest seven times, remaining a prominent presence in bodybuilding and writing many books and articles on the sport. He is widely considered to be among the greatest bodybuilders of all time as well as bodybuilding’s biggest icon. Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon. His breakthrough film was the sword-and-sorcery epic Conan the Barbarian in 1982, a box office hit that resulted in a sequel.

In 1984, Schwarzenegger appeared in James Cameron‘s science-fiction thriller film The Terminator, a critical and commercial success. Schwarzenegger subsequently reprised the Terminatorcharacter in the franchise‘s later installments: Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and Terminator Genisys (2015).[2][3][4] He has appeared in a number of successful films, such as Commando (1985), The Running Man (1987), Predator (1987), Twins(1988), Total Recall (1990), Kindergarten Cop (1990), and True Lies (1994). In 2015, it was announced that Schwarzenegger would replace Donald Trump as the host of The Celebrity Apprentice, though he left after one season due to conflicts caused by Trump’s remarks. Schwarzenegger was nicknamed “the Austrian Oak” in his bodybuilding days, “Arnie” during his acting career, and “The Governator” (a portmanteau of “Governor” and “The Terminator“) during his political career.

As a Republican, Schwarzenegger was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall electionto replace then-Governor Gray Davis. He was sworn in on November 17, to serve the remainder of Davis’ term. He was then re-elected in the 2006 California gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor. In 2011, he completed his second term as governor and returned to acting.

Why do we fundraise for breast cancer cures?

  • Because 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
  • Because every 19 seconds, somewhere in the world, a case of breast cancer is diagnosed in a woman.
  • Because every 60 seconds, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer; every 13 minutes, one woman in the U.S. will lose her life to breast cancer.
  • Because breast cancer knows no boundaries. It affects people of every age, gender, socio-economic status and location.
  • Because at the current rate, 13 million breast cancer deaths will occur around the world in the next 25 years.
  • Because it’s time to go beyond breast cancer awareness. It’s time to take action!

Take Action

We can fight these statistics together. Join the breast cancer movement by fundraising for Race for the Cure®.

Your fundraising has the power to make a true impact. Just consider how far we have come, thanks in part to supporters like you:

  • Race for the Cure® has raised more than $2 billion to help fund research, education, screening and treatment.
  • In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer was about 74 percent. Today, that number is 99 percent.
  • Since our founding in 1982, Susan G. Komen’s national research program has invested in cutting-edge research that has helped make major breakthroughs possible.
  • Funding for discoveries in genetics and biology has led to personalized, less-invasive breast cancer treatments to replace the less-effective “one-treatment-fits-all” approach.

Race for the Cure® is your opportunity to turn your support for the breast cancer movement into action. Prove that you are More Than Pink™, and help us end breast cancer forever.

I first met John Glenn when I was 9 years old and had the honor of meeting (and photographing him) dozens of times over the years. He was a truly unique person, being whole heartedly genuine and pure spirited. Each and every time I saw him the one constant was his childhood sweetheart Annie by his side – I never saw them separated. I can’t imagine her sorrow.

We’ve lost a true American hero and just a nice guy. He was Captain America, Steve Canyon and Mr. Rogers all rolled into one and always accompanied by his Wonder Woman Annie.

My sympathy goes out to Annie, Lynn and David.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, and United States Senator from Ohio. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times.

Before joining NASA, Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II, China and Korea. He shot down three MiG-15 aircraft, and was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. His on-board camera took the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the United States.

He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA as the United States’ first astronauts. On February 20, 1962, Glenn flew the Friendship 7 mission, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth, and the fifth person and third American in space. He received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1962 and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990, and was the last surviving member of the Mercury Seven.

Glenn resigned from NASA in January 1964. He planned to run for a U.S. Senate seat from Ohio, but an injury in February 1964 forced his withdrawal. He retired from the Marine Corps the following year. He lost a close primary election in 1970. A member of the Democratic Party, Glenn first won election to the Senate in 1974 and served for 24 years until January 1999.

In 1998, while still a sitting senator, Glenn became the oldest person to fly in space as a crew member of the Discovery space shuttle and the only person to fly in both the Mercury and Space Shuttle programs. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

In 1931, as the nation struggled thru the great depression and unemployment was rampant, Pein had the State Auto Insurance’s building on E. Broad Street decorated with more than 1,000 blinking lights, Christmas trees on the roof and an electric sign proclaiming “Christmas Greetings.”

Pein, who grew up the third of seven children in an impoverished Cincinnati household, was intent on his spectacular Christmas decorations because he recalled that although his family had been poor, “Christmas was somehow Christmas.”

Pein, who died just before Christmas in 1956, called the display a “Christmas card to the community.”

No photos survive of the original display, but The Columbus Citizen newspaper noted on Dec. 25, 1931: “Trinity Episcopal Church boys sang Christmas carols in front of the State Automobile Insurance Co. building on Christmas Eve in the city’s only outdoor public observance.”

On Christmas Day that depression year, the display gave cheer to passers-by on their way to church, friends’ homes and family gatherings.

The next year, the display was back — with 1,000 more lights, four crosses, a star and 853 Christmas trees. “Eight electricians worked around the clock for a week to complete the spectacle,” the company reported.

The display disappeared during World War II years and was downsized during the postwar years while the company’s headquarters were remodeled and rebuilt.

The company’s entire E. Broad St. building, which was now five stories tall, was decked out for the 1954 display. In 1962, the display’s signature life-size Nativity figures were added.

For 50 years, Mary, Joseph and a changing array of Nativity figures have drawn crowds each Christmas season.

In 2009, the display was moved from a raised area in front of the building to a small park to the east, where families can walk among the statues as they follow the story of the birth of Jesus.
